Elder Speakers

Through many generations our ancestors passed to us the stories of our heritage. In this way we have preserved an understanding of our culture and today we wish to share those with you on your visit to our village of Klukwan, Alaska. Our story is not just one of the past, but one of the present and of how the future will shape our lives and destiny.

Our Elders and Speakers

Dan Katzeek was born in the late 1800's at Chilkat Lake. He was the past care-taker of the Killer Whale House. Dan was a well known silversmith and pieces of his work can still be seen at the Sheldon Museum in Haines. Dan saw many changes occur in his life time. As a speaker he passed on many stories of our heritage to his children and grandchildren. Dan had a deep love for nature and took from it only what he needed to provide for himself, his family and others that where in need.

In the photo to the left Dan can be seen in his hand-crafted canoe fishing for Salmon along the Chilkat River. Dan was always happy when he was on the water.

Dan was a skilled craftsman and  woodworker. He used tools like this adze to create many useful items such as the canoe above.

John D. Katzeek is the current care taker of the Killer Whale House (Keet Gooshi House), one of the tribal houses viewed by our guests. John's goal as current caretaker is to build a new house to help preserve the 8 corner poles housed there.
Ruth Kasko is a tribal elder and member of the IRA village board. Ruth is one of our main speakers at the ANS Hall. She was born and raised in Klukwan, Alaska
Smith Katzeek was born and raised in Klukwan, Alaska. He is our main "narrator" and driver to Klukwan. The pride Smith has for his culture and family are told in his very real and humorous stories.
